There is now a wide choice of accommodation in Padang, ranging from budget through mid-range to luxury options (with prices varying by a factor of up to 100!). The prices listed below are the ones that were being advertised at the end of 2012. Prices may change in either direction by June, and also, it may be possible to obtain substantial discounts by asking nicely at the front desk, or, in the case of more upmarket places, by finding special online deals. The prices give you a rough indication of the facilities that you might expect to find, though as always you must be prepared to find that some of the facilities being advertised (airconditioning, hot water, wifi, whatever) are broken down and the guy in charge has gone back to his village. The hotels listed below are grouped in accordance with their location: (1) in Ulak Karang, near Universitas Bung Hatta; (2) in Purus, located between the university and the city center; and (3) in the City Center. Bus transportation to and from the conference each day will be provided from designated pick-up points in Purus and the City Center.
Ulak KarangThe following hotels are within a 5 to 15 minute walking distance of UBH, or a very short ojek ride. The advantage of staying near to the conference site is balanced by the fact that after hours there is rather less on offer in the neighborhood.

PurusPurus is a mostly residential neighborhood located about a 10 minute drive south from UBH, or 10 minutes north of the City Center. The waterfront here is lined with a string of eating and drinking places, which become more elaborate towards the southern end of the strip. For those staying in Purus, the designated pick-up point is the Hotel Mercure.

City CenterThe City Center has the most to offer: the central market, a small Chinatown (known locally as "pondok"), a picturesque riverfront, and the waterfront with another string of eating and drinking places. It also has the widest variety of accommodation options. The City Center is about a 20 minte drive south of UBH. For those staying in the City Center, the designated pick-up point is the Grand Inna Muara.
