Workshop on Documentary Linguistics
UNIPA Manokwari
27th - 28th January

This workshop will provide methodological and technical training in various aspects of language documentation research, including producing good quality, state of the art audio and video recordings, data transcription and analysis, and dictionary making.

The first session will be a hands on training of how to use video and audio recording devices, and trying out different microphones for different recording situation. In a second session will be an introduction to ELAN, a tool for transcribing speech recordings. We will use the previously created recordings for further processing. The second day (sessions four and five) will concentrate on the use of Toolbox as a programme for adding annotations to transcribed text, and particularly as a tool for compiling a dictionary database.

The workshop is open for all students and staff members of UNIPA, and anybody who wants to learn some of the basic tools of language documentation.

Participants are also invited to take part in the Workshop on Lexical Semantics and Polysemy, taking place one the same days (27-28 January) in the afternoon.
