The Intonation Of Manado Malay
Ruben Stoel
rubenstoel@yahoo.com

My talk will be about the intonation of Manado Malay. Many linguists think that intonation is a very difficult subject. They might be wrong. When you have heard my talk you may come to realize that it is manageable. All what you need are accents and edge tones. There are two types of accents: focus accents and particle accents. Focus accents are used to mark the end of a focus domain. There are three types of focus accents, depending on whether the sentence is a statement, a yes-no questions, or a question-word question. Particle accents are used only on discourse particles. Some of these particles have a typical accent of their own, while others are never accented at all. Edge tones mark the edge of a prosodic domain. I will show that in most contexts the edge tones are fully predictable. I will also introduce some stereotyped intonation-patterns that are unique for Manado Malay.
